Emily B
Elementary & Middle School
Emily has over 13 years of experience as an urban educator working with K – 6th grade students. Emily earned her bachelor's degree from Ithaca College where she studied creative writing and played lacrosse. After earning a master’s degree in Elementary Education from American University in Washington, DC, she taught 3rd through 6th grade at a bilingual public charter school for 10 years. A desire to learn Spanish and immerse herself in a new country and culture led Emily to live in Santiago de Chile for two years, where she taught 3rd and 4th grade at a British bilingual school. Emily is thrilled to be a NYC resident and currently teaches 4th grade at Community Roots Charter School.
Inquiry is at the center of Emily's work as an educator. Through student-centered inquiry comes joy for learning and mastery of complex concepts. Emily brings a deep understanding of how children learn and how to use inquiry to facilitate the development of core mathematical concepts and skills. Emily uses approaches that facilitate the development of analytical reasoning, a love for learning and an inclination for problem solving. Emily meets learners at the leading edges of their current thinking and is fully committed to finding ways to help her students learn.
In her free time she enjoys practicing yoga and meditation, running, exploring NYC neighborhoods, writing, taking salsa dancing lessons, hiking, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and learning Spanish.
